Rocky Mountain Drive

The Rocky Mountain Drive through Canada is a dream journey for anyone who loves mountains. We recommend 6 to 8 days for this drive. You can do it in 4 days if you are in a hurry but you will regret rushing past so many beautiful places. With a full week you can enjoy hikes, boat rides on the lakes, and plenty of time to watch for animals.

Best time to visit

The ideal period is from June to September when the roads are completely open and the weather is best for driving and hiking. July and August are the warmest months but also the busiest. Late spring and early fall offer fewer crowds and beautiful colors, though some higher sections may still have snow.

Best viewpoints

Peyto Lake lookout is one of the most famous stops, with its incredible view of the bright turquoise water shaped like a wolf's head. Athabasca Glacier is another highlight where you can get close to the ice. Dont miss the Valley of the Five Lakes near Jasper, it offers beautiful short walks with multiple colored lakes.

Hidden gems along the route

While Lake Louise gets crowded, there are many quieter spots. Herbert Lake is often almost empty and reflects the mountains perfectly. Near Jasper, Medicine Lake changes its size dramatically depending on the season and feels very peaceful. Some of the best wildlife moments happen on smaller roads where you can spot bears, elk, and mountain goats without many other cars around.
